Jane makes baskets which are traditional, functional and durable and will give you many years of service. Each basket is unique and entirely made by hand using a few simple tools. Many of the baskets are made using willow grown here at Seafield Farm so as well as being useful, your basket will be a memory of the Argyll landscape.
Willow is cut in the winter, sorted, stored and dried and then soaked to make it pliable for weaving. Several colourful varieties are grown at Seafield, adding interest and variety to the baskets.
Baskets are available for sale and range in price from £5 - £20 for a small or medium fruit basket, £32 - £48 for a medium or large round, oval or square shopper and up to £75 for a large log basket. There is a 10% discount on baskets for our holiday cottage visitors. Commissions are welcome but it is unlikely that a basket can be made to order during your stay here unless the willow has been prepared and there is time to weave.
Basketmaking and teaching tends to be a winter occupation when there is less work to do in the garden and the cottages. There are usually baskets on display in the workshop and you are welcome to come and watch if I happen to be weaving.
Making baskets is a fun activity for small groups and everyone goes home with a finished basket. Courses can be arranged on request for 3 to 5 adults at a cost of between £45 & £55 per person per day including use of tools, materials and tea, coffee and cake. At least three weeks notice is required to allow for preparation of materials - please email for further information. Why not make a weekend of it? Accommodation in cottages can be arranged at additional cost.
Visitors to the workshop are welcome but please phone or email first to make sure I will be here.
