Basketmaking at Seafield
I've been making baskets for almost 30 years which are traditional, functional and durable and will give you many years of service. Each basket is unique and entirely made by hand using a few simple tools. Most of the baskets are made using willow grown here at Seafield Farm so, as well as being useful, your basket will be a memory of the Argyll landscape.
I cut my willow by hand during the winter when the leaves have fallen. It is sorted into bundles according to length, which are then stored in an open barn and allowed to dry out naturally. The dried rods are soaked for several days to make them pliable for weaving. A range of colourful varieties are grown at Seafield, adding interest and variety to the baskets.
Baskets are usually available for sale in the workshop and range in price from £30 for a small or medium fruit basket, from £35 - £65 for a round, oval or square shopper and from £85 for a log basket. Price depends on size and complexity of the basket. Visitors to the workshop are welcome but please phone or email first to make sure I will be here. I do not have an online shop preferring customers to see the baskets before buying.
Basketmaking Courses
My main focus is on basketmaking rather than teaching and I don’t have a regular programme of courses. I do occasionally teach groups who wish to spend time together being guided through the experience of making a basket. If this is something you’d like to do, I can arrange a course for 3 - 5 adults. I teach at my workshop here at Seafield where I have everything to hand. Three weeks notice is required for preparation. Basketry is a complex craft and requires good hand strength. It is a surprisingly physical craft.
